Feb 22, 2025: Special Letter to the Membership

Greetings Fellow 49ers,

Our organization, the Death Valley '49ers, needs your help! We have many good options for our future events, but we must fill positions on our Board of Directors and on our Production Committee in order to continue. It’s simple, no volunteers = no future. Sitting on the sidelines and waiting for someone else to do the work may have been okay in the past, but our future can only happen if new people step forward. Someone else is not going to put on our encampment…we are.

The good news is that we are a group ready for the changes that our future will bring. As a volunteer, you can have a role in shaping what this looks like. Find your place in our organization… a place where you will be doing what you enjoy and that plays on your strengths. Here are some details about these volunteer opportunities.

Production Committee

Folks on this committee will develop the encampment programing and then work overseeing the event. This is the worker-bee side of our team. This will include deciding what we offer,  where, and when. Making the necessary arrangements, marketing, coordinating other volunteers needed during each activity, and any other task necessary to hold our event. We need at least (5) people on this committee to share the load. Come find your spot on this crew.

Board of Directors

The Board has an important job… and it is not running an encampment; that’s Production. The Board’s job is providing direction to our organization. This could include shaping a funding model for the future, and applying for grants or  sponsorships. The Board is also responsible for the administration of the '49ers non-profit organization. This involves filing all necessary forms and updates required by the State of California and the IRS. Other responsibilities include preparing regular financial reports, bookkeeping, auditing our finances, securing insurance, coordinating with the Park Service, and maintaining our relationships with other partners in the area. The Board can operate with a minimum of three (3) members (it can have a maximum of 9). Additionally, we must have a Secretary and a Treasurer. These two positions can be board members, but they don’t have to be. If you have a background or interest in these tasks you can play a major role in shaping a new look for the '49ers. Come steer the '49ers into the future!

Thank you for doing your part. Please email Tim Young, Vice Chairperson and let him know what you want to do for the '49ers. Do not delay; the Board needs to hear from you NOW!  You may also use the Contact section on the website.

Thank you,
Woody Adams, Past-President
